what is sdact membership? July 30, 2007 As you know, we have asked our supporters to sign authorization cards designating SDACT as the sole and exclusive collecting bargaining agent with their employer. As mentioned previously, signing a card does not make you a SDACT member. Recently, we have received several inquiries from SDACT supporters asking when and how one then becomes a “card-carrying” member of SDACT. To answer that question, let us explain what privileges come with SDACT membership. First, since the SDACT is a democratically-run organization, membership gives you a voice in deciding all that the Association does. For example, it allows you input into those demands that the union will make at the bargaining table. It also gives you a vote in selecting those who will represent the union in the bargaining process. Moreover, it gives you a vote on what is (or is not) an acceptable contract package once negotiations have reached the finishing point. Following negotiations and the implementation of the first contract, membership then gives you access to a whole array of services, including follow-up support on any contract issue, particularly in any conflict resolution that might be necessary (including legal assistance, should you need it.) But as you can see, all this comes after SDACT gains recognition from our new employer to act as your agent. Therefore, as soon as recognition has been obtained, our membership drive will begin. We hope those of you who have so loyally supported us in our drive toward recognition will continue that support by becoming SDACT members. We hope that that next step will be taken very soon.
