Know Your Rights - The Weingarten Rule

Employees have the right to be notified, in advance, by their employer of any meetings, discussions or interviews at which discipline might be assessed, discussed, or which might reasonably be anticipated to lead to discipline. Known as the Weingarten Rule, this right also gives the employee the right to request Association representation at any such meeting as described above.

We urge all of our members to cut out the following section and keep it in their wallets or purses. If called to a meeting with your principal, or any other agent of your employer, present this statement to him/her before the meeting starts.

If this meeting or discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined, terminated, or affect my personal working conditions, I respectfully request that my union representative be present. Without this representation, I choose not to participate in this meeting or discussion.
